Immigration officers arrested for Smuggling of illegal foreigners

Johor Bahru: Three officers of the Immigration Department (JIM) and two civilians were arrested for asking and accepting bribes, to smuggle foreigners in through the Senai International Airport, here.

According to Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission (MACC) sources, the five suspects involved four men and one woman aged between 35 to 46 years old.

He said the Johor MACC in collaboration with the Johor JIM Integrity Unit had led to the arrest of three Immigration officers and two civilians, yesterday.

“The three immigration officers on duty at Senai Airport and the two civilians were detained from about 5pm to 11pm yesterday separately at the Johor MACC Office and in Larkin, Johor Bahru.

JIM Johor’s integrity team has carried out regular integrity compliance inspections at the airport and has checked the mobile phones of officers on duty. The team has found several short messages via the WhatsApp application on the mobile phones of the officers.

“It contains the offering and acceptance of bribes from foreigners who want to enter Malaysia through the relevant immigration officers. They help admit foreigners without going through the correct process and procedures in accordance with the Standing Instructions of the Director General of Immigration No. 03 of 2019 and the Immigration Act 1956/63 ,” said the source.

Meanwhile, Johor MACC Director, Datuk Azmi Alias when contacted confirmed the arrest. The case is being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009.

“All the suspects were brought to the Johor Bahru Magistrate’s Court at 8:30 this morning to obtain a remand application,” he said.
