Immigration detained 567 foreigners in an apartment in Bangsar

KUALA LUMPUR: The Immigration Department arrested 567 foreigners for various offenses including not having valid travel documents in an operation at an apartment in Abdullah Hukum, Bangsar, here early this morning.

The director of Kuala Lumpur Immigration, Syamsul Badrin Mohshin, said the operation lasted for about three hours starting at 1.15am as a result of his intelligence for a week following complaints from residents regarding the influx of foreigners in the area.

“A total of 1,000 foreigners were checked in the operation, and the 567 illegal immigrants arrested consisted of 252 Bangladeshis, Nepal (163), Myanmar (75), Indonesia (72), Philippines (four) and India (one).

“The detained illegal immigrants aged one to 55 were taken to the Bukit Jalil Immigration Detention Depot, and investigated following Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63,” he told reporters after the operation.

He said preliminary investigations found that the illegal immigrants involved were living in houses with eight to 10 occupants per premises, with rental rates starting at RM1,000 per month, and that they were believed to be working around the apartment which was located close to several famous shopping centres.

Syamsul Badrin said the operation involving 85 immigration officers and members to inspect the 14-storey apartment also faced challenges when some foreigners tried to escape by jumping from the building and refused to open the door, forcing the immigration members to break down the doors.
