Illegal foreigners’ smuggling: Two local agents arrested

PONTIAN: Two local women are among the five individuals who were arrested for being involved in the smuggling network of Illegal Immigrants (PATI) in Pontian waters, here, yesterday.

The two women, aged 25 and 33, were successfully arrested along with two foreign male seamen aged 23 and 25, as well as a 40-year-old foreign national ‘transporter’.

Pontian District Police Chief, Superintendent Mohammad Shofee Tayib said, they were arrested in Op Pintas, Taring Gelora and Taring Landai by the Pontian District Criminal Investigation Division (BSJD) of the Kukup Region 2 Marine Police Force.

He said, five male illegal aliens between the ages of 14 and 51 were also arrested who tried to escape by using the services of land and sea smugglers.

“Also seized was a car, a boat used to carry PATI and cash totaling RM60,000,” he said in a statement here today.

Mohammad Shofee added, this success is also the cooperation and information from the public who want smuggling activities to be curbed to ensure the country is free from PATI.

“The arrest was investigated under Section 26A Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants (ATIPSOM) 2007 which provides for a prison sentence of not more than 20 years and a fine if convicted.

“And Section 261 Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants which provides for a prison sentence of no more than 5 years and a fine of no more than 250,000 thousand or both,” he said.

He said, in addition to Section 6 (1) (c) of the Immigration Act 1959 which provides for a prison sentence of not less than 3 months and not more than 2 years and whipping of not less than 3 lashes if convicted.

Accordingly, he stressed that he will not compromise and will take strict action against any individual or group involved in migrant smuggling activities in this district.
