A total of 74 foreign GROs were arrested in a raid on an entertainment center

JOHOR BAHRU: The state police raided an entertainment center in Stulang Laut, here yesterday morning that offered the services of foreign nationals as customer service girls (GRO).

In the 2.45am raid by a team of officers and policemen from Division D7, Johor’s Contingent Criminal Investigation Department arrested a total of 74 GROs consisting of Thai, Vietnamese and Laotian women.

Johor Police Chief, Datuk Kamarul Zaman Mamat said all those arrested were between 22 to 45 years old and believed to be working without a valid permit.

“In the raid, the police also arrested a local man, who is the manager of the entertainment center and a local woman who works as a cashier for violating the terms of operation of the entertainment center.

“They were also arrested because they are suspected of employing foreign workers without a valid permit,” he told reporters, here today.

Kamarul Zaman said that a local male customer who is a wanted person under Section 420 of the Penal Code was also arrested.

“Strict action will be taken against any party or individual who violates the terms of operation of the entertainment center in accordance with existing legal provisions, including the proposed license cancellation to the local authorities,” he stressed.

The case is being investigated under Section 11(2) of the Johor State Entertainment and Places of Entertainment Enactment as well as Regulation 39b of the Immigration Regulations 1963 and Section 55B, Section 6(1)(c) and Section 15(1)(c) of the same act.

Over the past year, the state police conducted 602 raids on the premises of entertainment centers and arrested a total of 1,733 people.

“It involved 514 men and 102 women local citizens, 143 men and 974 women foreign citizens, the raid also involved a total of RM104,445 in loot,” he said.
