A foreign woman was arrested for trying to grab the necklaces of Batu Caves temple visitors

KUALA LUMPUR: A foreign woman was arrested after trying to steal a necklace belonging to an elderly woman in an incident near the Batu Caves temple.

Gombak District Police Chief, ACP Noor Ariffin Mohamad Nasir said his side received a report regarding the incident that happened at about 5pm, when the 64-year-old victim was walking with her two grandchildren aged 17 and 15, on the side of the road near the temple.

The victim was then pushed by the suspect who tried to pull the elderly woman’s necklace. When the incident happened, there were public witnesses who saw and screamed causing the suspect to release the chain and pull it until it broke and fell on the road.

“The suspect tried to escape but was arrested with the help of the public before being handed over to the police,” he said in a statement today.

Noor Ariffin said the remand application for the 45-year-old suspect will be made at the Selayang Magistrate’s Court today, for further investigation according to Section 393 of the Penal Code.

“We advise the public to be more careful and vigilant in keeping their property safe while visiting and celebrating Thaipusam at the Batu Caves Temple,” he said.
