500,000 Foreigners Are Unemployed In Malaysia

More than 500,000 foreigners are recorded as unemployed or not hired by any employer.

It is understood that those who enter legally do not have a job and thus become the cause of the influx of foreign workers which is now estimated to exceed 2.7 million.

The Secretary General of the National Association of Malaysian Private Service Agencies (PAPSMA), Dr Sukumaran Nair told media that the number of unemployed foreigners is actually much higher.

He also said that about two million foreign workers were brought in during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2022, but the number needed was only about 1.2 million.

Previously, the Minister of Plantation and Commodities, Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani had already warned that the government would take strict action against any employer who failed to place foreigners in the employment sector.

This follows the incident where a total of 171 Bangladeshi nationals claimed to have been cheated by employment agents walked en masse in the Kota Tinggi district, Johor, causing public unrest on 20 December.
