184 arrested during raids on entertainment center

JOHOR BAHRU : Police arrested 184 individuals, including 162 foreigners, in special operations at entertainment centers on Friday and Saturday.

Johor Police Chief, Commissioner M Kumar said, the operation started at 12 midnight involving officers and members of the Criminal Investigation Department and the Johor Contingent Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department.

He said raids were carried out on premises suspected of carrying out unlicensed entertainment activities, providing customer service (GRO) to foreigners and drug abuse.

All those detained consist of 32 men and 152 women involving 22 local citizens and 162 foreigners aged between 21 and 64 years.

“All the detainees were found to have committed an offense in accordance with Section 6 (2) and Section 11(2) of the Johor State Entertainment and Places of Entertainment Enactment 1988, Section 39 (b) of the Immigration Regulation, Section 6(1)(c), Section 15(1) )(c) and 55B of the Immigration Act 1959/63,” he said in a statement on Sunday.

Kumar said that 18 men and 30 women tested positive for methamphetamine.

A local man wanted under Section 420 of the Penal Code was also arrested during the operation.

“The police confiscated various entertainment equipment such as DVD players, amplifiers, laptops, speakers, microphones and cash believed to be business proceeds,” he said.

He added that all the detainees will be brought to court for remand applications.

“All 22 local citizens arrested will be remanded under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code while 162 arrested foreigners will be remanded under the Immigration Act 1959/63,” he said.
